Group Work

This is a transformative project that unfolds as an symphony between architecture and lighting, reimagining a design school nestled within the vibrant heart of The New School. Drawing inspiration from the profound sense of community that defines the university. Embracing the ethos of Adaptive Reuse, the design meticulously crafts a set of criteria and strategies, weaving a tapestry of spaces that enrich the multifaceted student experience. From fostering social and ecological consciousness to promoting mental, physical, and academic well-being, two intentionally placed atria serve as luminous focal points, channeling daylight into surrounding spaces at each level. To extend the ethos of ecological and sustainable consciousness, a Food Cooperative takes center stage along with a greenhouse on the 13th street side, operated collaboratively by coop employees and volunteering students.

A meticulous site analysis was done on the site that is positioned at the 39W 13th Street, in New York City, the New School building becomes both canvas and catalyst for our innovative approach. Recognizing 13th street as a vital student walkway and 14th street as a bustling commercial street, our analysis unveils the unique roles each arterial plays in the urban layer. Complementing this, a detailed sun path analysis strategically places programs, harnessing natural light to elevate both user experience and energy efficiency. This holistic perspective ensures the seamless integration of the New School building into the dynamic urban fabric of NYC.

Guided by the orchestration of spaces as a transformative tool, the design unfolds an institutional structure devoted to nurturing students in various facets of life. From fostering social and ecological consciousness to promoting mental, physical, and academic well-being, the design synthesizes these elements harmoniously. Two intentionally placed atria serve as luminous focal points, channeling daylight into surrounding spaces at each level. Distinguished in their treatment, one harbors a dynamic stairwell, while the other cradles a lightwell embraced by cascading stairs, creating a visual spectacle that transcends mere functionality.
